FRENCH ADJECTIVES RECALL WORKBOOK #1

66-page written recall workbook 400 French adjectives, French-English and English-French, with four written recall challenges. My students find the written recall challenges really useful throughout the school year, and particularly as we approach exam time - they generally like to work at their own pace, either in class time or at home. Students can challenge themselves multiple times, simply by covering over previous responses, which means we’re able to get a lot of use from a single book, saving both prep time and paper.
The workbook is ideal for advanced French students, and as a refresher and vocabulary audit for those moving into KS5 A Level French. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA).
There are four written recall challenges in the workbook:
Written Recall Challenge One all four hundred adjectives in alphabetical order French-English - students are prompted for the English translation of a French adjective
Written Recall ChallengeTwo this challenge also requires students to write the English translation from a French prompt, but the adjectives are in random, rather than alphabetical order - students often learn new vocabulary in alphabetical order, so this can be great practice in recall
Written Recall Challenge Three the four hundred adjectives are in alphabetical order English-French - students give the French translation of an English adjective
Written Recall Challenge Four with this challenge, the English adjective prompts are in random order, and students give the French translation
The challenges work well together, and we do revisit them regularly over quite a long period of time. When students are very focused on particular vocabulary, they’re able to embed the vocabulary really successfully, and feel confident using it in a wide range of contexts. It’s useful to work on creative writing in French regularly too, so that students can apply their French practically, and I encourage them to use a wide range of adjectives, thinking about synonyms too.

400 high-frequency French adjectives, listed alphabetically both French-English and English-English with gender agreement guide - a great learning support resource for intermediate French and as a refresher and vocabulary audit for advanced French students. It’s useful to give the book to advanced beginner French students too, as it provides a language road map with learning goals, outlining the adjectives they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning.
I create a lot of language learning reference books for my languages students, they’re really popular with my students, who like to have a bank of reference resources for both initial learning and longer-term learning and revision. There are 42 pages in the book, and all 400 adjectives are listed alphabetically French-English and English-French. Each adjective is also shown in the masculine, feminine, singular and plural forms, which my students find really helpful as they begin to engage with gender agreement in French. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out a French or English adjective, with teams giving the corresponding French or English adjective - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential French vocabulary.
The adjectives are useful for engaging with the following topics and themes:
youth, identity & lifestyle : fashion : culture, customs and traditions relationships and family : technology and social media : sport, health and fitness
free time, hobbies and interests : entertainment and leisure : food and drink
France and French-speaking countries : local, national & international global areas of interest : transport : holidays, tourism and travel : environment, pollution, recycling and climate : social issues : school, college, current and future study : work experience, skills and personal qualities : employment, ambitions and career plans

Perfect for developing French language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising numbers 0-21 in French. There are 36 differentiated questions, answer key, recording sheet and number reference sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. There’s also a question card template for students to apply language creatively and practically, which is an essential aspect of successful language learning, and is also a really popular activity with my students.
Task cards are really versatile too - we use them not only when we’re focusing on the target vocabulary, but throughout the year for sub lessons, as entrance and exit tickets, refreshers and free-choice learning. The goal is not simply to learn and practice how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with language, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions range in complexity and challenge, ensuring a scaffolded learning experience for students.
All the questions are in French, including a range of French math language. Students may not necessarily engage with that at this stage of their learning, so I use math symbols as visual clues and prompts, enabling students to infer meaning from context. This is a key language learning skill in general, which is important for students to develop as quickly as possible.
The resource comprises the following non-editable files in a zipped format:
36 differentiated question cards 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out. Laminating is definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as they cards are far more learner-friendly, and last for absolutely years
answer recording sheet we mostly use class notebooks for recording answers, as this saves prep time and paper, though recording sheets are really useful for more formal assessment purposes
answer key helps students develop more independence in, and responsibility for, their learning, and also give them an additional opportunity to engage with language
question card template students apply their knowledge practically and creatively, which is an essential element in successful language learning
number reference sheet

Perfect for young learners of French and an ideal introduction to the animal kingdom in French. They provide lots of opportunities to learn a range of animals, both***masculine and feminine***, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Children can develop their skills in word recognition and recall, pronunciation, speaking, listening and reading in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They’re a great way of introducing the concept of gender, and of looking at the indefinite article in French too.
It doesn’t matter is any of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the card games encourage children to engage happily and confidently with French, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in French. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of unknown words using both visual clues and prompts, as well as linguistic indicators.
There are 24 animals featured, across a series of decks, which enable you to vary and differentiate your games:
Deck 1: picture and words cards, with both an image of, and the word for, the animal in French, which is useful for multi-skill learning, particularly in the introductory phase of learning animal vocabulary, and for familiarising students with the written word in French.
Deck 2: picture-only cards, useful for vocabulary recall
Deck 3: word-only cards in French, useful for word recognition, reading and spelling.
Deck 4: word-only cards in English, useful for a variety of games focusing on vocabulary recall
Deck 5: both French & English words on a single card, useful for close comparison of language, and recognition of corresponding words
Play the games regularly for maximum benefit. I’ve described a range that work well with my classes. Playing against a timer adds some extra fun - can children beat their own time record?
The animals featured are:
a bee : a bird : a butterfly : a cat : a caterpillar : a chicken : a cow : a dog
a donkey : a duck : a fish : a fox : a frog : a horse : a kangaroo : a monkey
a mouse : an owl : a parrot : a pig : a rabbit : a sheep : a spider : a turtle / tortoise

These German animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous German look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of German. They introduce learners to a range of animals in German from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how German words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My younger German students really love the animals posters, and like to compare the German and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of the animal kingdom. We don’t necessarily learn all the animals, but we do use them for pronunciation and speaking practice, and for memory games too. Students definitely notice the different words for the, and ask why some animals are der, and others are die or das. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender.
Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating.
There are 20 animals using the masculine, feminine and neuter definite article, which again is a great opportunity to begin to compare German to English, looking closely at capitalization of nouns. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as Bär and Wolf.
The animals are:
bear; bee; bird; butterfly; cat; dog; fish; fox; frog;horse; kangaroo; monkey; mouse; owl; parrot; rabbit; spider; squirrel; turtle/tortoise;
wolf
There are two sets of 20 9.5x11 (A4) portrait posters, two backgrounds to choose from: animal footprint or German flag.

I like to introduce telling time as soon as possible in my German learning programs, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, talking about daily routines for example. The word wall is useful not only during the introductory phase, but also during the practice and consolidation phase, ensuring that key language is always visible and accessible to learners. It’s important not to move ahead with time phrases too quickly, and I make sure that students are fully confident with a time set before introducing a new one.
We talk a lot about the similarities and differences in how we tell time in the different languages too, and I’ve found that very young learners actually develop their confidence in telling time in their first language. I do vary my word wall displays on a regular basis, as they’re great as revision tools too, and this also prevents learning displays becoming ‘invisible’ to students.
There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format, which facilitates a sufficiently large font size that can be seen from various locations in the classroom. There are two headers in the set: Die Uhrzeit and Wie viel Uhr ist es? Creating new headers, such as Wie spät ist es? is a really popular activity too.
There are two backgrounds to choose from: German flag, which looks really good for German vocabulary / key language display, or black wave. If you can, laminate the word wall cards, as they hang really well, and last in excellent condition for years, meaning you can recycle the same word wall for a long time.
Have a look at this German Numbers 0-21 word wall freebie: it’s the same format as these sets, so you’ll be able to see whether the design would work well in your classroom:

English language verb reference resource for German-speaking students focusing on high-frequency English verbs. I’ve found that the lists are a great learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference, either in class or at home. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class.
This list is a fourth collection of 25 high-frequency English verbs that students will meet in the beginning to intermediate stages of English learning programmes. They are common English verbs, so they will see, hear and use the verbs regularly in daily life. They include regular and irregular verbs, and are all in the infinitive form - it’s an important step in learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize English verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in German - at that point they can move on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context. Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning 25 verbs all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing English verb vocabulary - embedding the verbs into long-term memory will come through frequent usage.
There are two alphabetical lists - one English-German, and one German-English, as I’ve found that beginner language students prefer to have both as a reference resource. There are two backgrounds to choose from - England flag (which looks good as grammar / vocabulary display), and black wave - students tell me that this makes vocab lists more visually appealing, which is really useful when they’ve got a lot of vocab to work through and learn.

German Numbers 0-100 Task Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of German numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in,speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in German. The translation questions are a great way of introducing beginner German learners to the concept of translation too. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on German Numbers 0-100, but also as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in German, but also to enjoy working with German, and to feel confident about doing so.
All questions are in German, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. There are visual prompts such as maths symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode clues and prompts to foster understanding. Some questions focus specifically on German maths language, which students do not always engage with very often. The question card template enables students to*** apply their knowledge of language and arithmetic creatively and practically*** too - students really enjoy creating questions for each other
The set comprises the following non-editable files:
48 differentiated question cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Laminate if possible - they’re far more learner-friendly and last for absolutely years!

The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on German Numbers 0-31, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in German, but also to enjoy working with German, and to feel confident about doing so.

The level of math is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning.
I’ve labelled the cards A-L, so that if you have the set of 48 task cards ($3), you can use them together.

I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my young beginner learners of German, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to***link it in their memory with a visual image***, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. Children glue the lists into their German vocabulary books, or file them in their German vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful German vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning.
For young and / or beginner German learners, I focus initially on a single time set, and this list shows half past the hour on a single page. This is because in my experience students benefit from a very clear outline of new language and vocabulary, avoiding lots of text on a single page - even my older students who are completely new to German prefer this. When I’m sure that students are confident with half past, I then move on to additional time sets. Students often find half past the hour in German quite challenging, so the focused practice is really useful.
There are two backgrounds to choose from - German flag, which I use for German vocabulary display, or plain.

99 beginner Italian words & phrases with 99 matching English vocabulary cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment, ideal for advanced beginner Italian learners, and a great revision resource for students entering into intermediate Italian.
The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write activities have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the words or phrases don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this is a great way of encouraging your students to engage with new language, and to build their vocabulary at the same time.
The vocabulary groups are as follows:
Saluti : I giorni della settimana : I mesi dell’anno : I numeri da 0 a 20
La mia famiglia : Le parole comuni : Italiano in classe : Domande e risposte
Students can work independently of the teacher, challenging themselves and each other in their best Italian accent to find all the matching words & phrases cards in Italian and English. The card templates allow students to apply their Italian knowledge practically and creatively, as they put together mini-quiz cards for each other, preferably from memory. Creating new language is an essential element of successful language learning, so this is a key part of the overall activity, and it’s really popular with my students.
The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Italian-English reference list of all 99 words & phrases. There are three recall challenges:
Written Recall Challenge One students write the English word or phrase from an Italian prompt, with all the words and phrases grouped together in the same category
Written Recall Challenge Two with this challenge, students write the words or phrases in Italian from an English prompt, and again, they’re all group together in the same category
Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge ‘switches’ at each question from Italian to English, and lists words and phrases randomly from each category. This challenges the memory more than when the vocabulary is in the order learners first learn it in, with the additional challenge of moving between the two languages - I’ve found that this really does encourage my students to think hard about their Italian vocabulary.
MOLTE GRAZIE E BUON APPRENDIMENTO!
